Health workers under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta chapter, on Wednesday faulted the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), over what it referred to as the medical doctors’ ego-based demands that gave rise to the ongoing strike.
The Chairman, National Union of Allied Health Professionals in the chapter, Mr. Lateef Rahmon, said the NMA was pursuing a selfish agenda capable of hindering other deserving officers in other arms of the heath sector from progressing to the peak of their career.
He said the JOHESU was in support of few demands bordering on the medical doctors’ welfare but condemned the agitation for the introduction of the Deputy Chief Medical Advisory Committee position, aimed at barring other health professionals from enjoying their statutory right of becoming medical directors.
He said, “JOHESU has no problem with some of the NMA’s demands that bordered on their welfare, but with the ones that are ego-driven like the demand that bars other health workers that have the required qualifications from becoming medical directors should not be allowed to sail through.”
The chapter chairman also stated that the leadership of JOHESU had gone to court over the matter.
He added, “Our leaders had gone to court to seek a restraining order to prevent the NMA from tampering with the law governing the promotion of workers to the post of a director.”
The Public Relations Officer of NUAHP, Mr. Alimi Talayo, and the Chairperson, National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Mrs. Abosede Fagoyinbo, also advised the government not to accede to the demands of the NMA.
The union leaders also advocated the review of the nation’s civil service law to address the disparities in workers’ salary.
